The Rules of Pickleball

Pickleball is a paddle sport that is played on a court with a low net and a perforated ball. The game is played with two or four players, and the objective is to hit the ball over the net and into the opponent's court, with the aim of winning points by making the ball land in the opponent's court without them being able to return it.

  • Serving: The game begins with the serve. The server must stand behind the baseline and hit the ball underhand, diagonally across the net, into the opponent's court. The ball must land within the opponent's service court. The first person to serve must call out the score, followed by the serving order. The first serve is always 0-0-2. If there is a fault, the serve transfers to the other team. Aside from the very first serve of the game, each team gets two chances to serve without a fault, and each server must call out the order they serve (ex. 0-0-1 or 0-0-2) after they call the score out.

  • Volleying: Once the ball is in play, players must let it bounce once before vollying it back. After the first bounce, players can either hit the ball in the air or let it bounce again before hitting it.

  • Scoring: Points are awarded to the serving team if they win the rally. The game is typically played to 11 points, and the winning team must win by two points.

  • Double Bounce Rule: Both teams must let the ball bounce once on each side before volleying the ball. After the two bounces, the ball can be hit in the air or allowed to bounce again.

  • Non-Volley Zone: A non-volley zone or "kitchen" is the area close to the net on both sides of the court. Players are not allowed to hit the ball in this area unless the ball has bounced first.

  • Faults: A fault occurs when a player fails to serve the ball into the opponent's court, hits the ball out of bounds, or violates any other rule of the game.
